For anyone who uses the KNKX (San Diego) sounding and/or the Miramar radar:
FXUS66 KSGX 271444
NKX RADAR AND UPPER AIR OPERATIONS WILL CONTINUE TO BE OUT UNTIL
FURTHER NOTICE...DUE TO THE FIRE IN THE SCRIPPS RANCH/MIRAMAR AREA.
I do not know at this time whether they were lost to the fire or are just
shutdown for safety. However, a large fire did sweep through that area
yesterday afternoon. I live about three miles west-southwest of the
upperair site and think it was probably lost (the fire got within about a
quarter mile of my house, but the fire department got it stopped). It is
likely the radar site was also lost.
Our tier one node (aeolus.ucsd.edu at Scripps Institution of Oceanography,
UC San Diego) is still not threatened by the fire as of 0900L this
morning. I don't know about the internet connections, but they're still
active as of this hour (at least, they are if you get this message!). UC
San Diego has been closed for normal operations today (I'm at home), but
they have not evacuated any students, yet.
I will advise when/if I know more.
