One of the most common problems with gdbm is using the wrong version.
The
version needs to be 1.7.3 not 1.8 For more detailed info on LDM using
gdbm go to : http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/glimpsedocs/ghdecoders.html
and
enter gdbm for the search.

Should endian-ness be an issue? Peter's comments in the source code
file README.linux (ver 4.10) suggests that it shouldn't be an issue.
