[ldm-users] Weatherx.admin.niu.edu information only update: 8 hour maintenance window

Hello everyone,

Monday morning at 13Z (8 AM CST), the new DVB-S2 NOAAport broadcast
begins (see below). NIU Weather is planning on remotely switching our
Novra S-300 to the new broadcast after I'm half awake...probably around
14Z (9 AM) or so.

I'll be using the new CMCS 1.8 Linux version that Novra gave me to do the switchover. If all goes well, I'd be up and running in 30 minutes or less. If I can't figure things out or mess things up, I've allotted an 8 hour maintenance window to clean up the mess.

WeatherX.admin.niu.edu all have IDD backup, and as such, no products should be lost. This will be done even if Monday is a severe weather day for us locally, unless it's bearing down on our area in an immediate threat Monday morning.

Thanks for your patience.

--------------------------------------------

AS EVERYONE IS AWARE, THE AWIPS PROGRAM IS IN THE
PROCESS OF EXPANDING THE BANDWIDTH ON THE AWIPS
SATELLITE BROADCAST NETWORK -SBN/NOAAPORT- FEED
FROM ABOUT 10MBPS TO ABOUT 30MBPS.

AS PART OF THIS EXPANSION, THE FEED WILL BE
TRANSITIONING FROM A DVB-S TO A DVB-S2 STANDARD.
ACCORDINGLY, ALL SITES WILL BE REQUIRED TO UPGRADE
THEIR HARDWARE TO SUPPORT THE DVB-S2 STANDARD.
ALL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS AS WELL AS UPDATES ON
THE PROJECT ARE AVAILABLE ON THE FOLLOWING WEB PAGE

------------------------------------------
WWW.NWS.NOAA.GOV/NOAAPORT/HTML/NOAAPORT.SHTML
------------------------------------------

A 30 DAY WINDOW OF DUAL ILLUMINATION IS PLANNED TO
ALLOW NWS SITES AND NOAAPORT CUSTOMERS TIME TO
COMPLETE THE TRANSITION. DURING THIS PERIOD, THE
FULL -SBN/NOAAPORT- FEED WILL BE DISSEMINATED IN
BOTH DVB-S AND DVB-S2.

INTERNALLY, NWS PLANS TO USE BACKWARDLY-COMPATIBLE
RECEIVE-SIDE HARDWARE TO ENABLE THE EQUIPMENT
TRANSITION TO COMMENCE PRIOR TO THE DUAL
ILLUMINATION PERIOD. AFTER MAY 17TH, THE ONLY
SIGNAL DISSEMINATED OVER THE -SBN/NOAAPORT- WILL
BE IN DVB-S2.

THIS NEW AND INCREASED -SBN/NOAAPORT- BANDWIDTH
WHICH WILL HELP TO ENABLE DISSEMINATION OF THE NEW
PRODUCTS THAT ARE ON THE HORIZON FOR OUR CUSTOMERS
WILL MAKE THIS A VERY EXCITING CHANGE FOR EVERYONE.
