[ldm-users] But what about the stepchild, NWWS?

Hey everyone,

By now, you should be slinging rotten tomatoes at me, or
at least taking me off your Christmas card list this year
with all these emails. But, I had one other idea as I am playing around with the new NOAAport feed.

What about NWWS? That's being sent, too, on the same channel as NOAAport. Can we get it? And more importantly, would the LDM handle it?

So, I decided to find out. In my ldmd.conf, I have:

EXEC "noaaportIngester -m 224.0.1.1"
EXEC "noaaportIngester -m 224.0.1.2"
EXEC "noaaportIngester -m 224.0.1.3"
EXEC "noaaportIngester -m 224.0.1.4"
EXEC "noaaportIngester -m 224.0.1.5"
EXEC "noaaportIngester -m 224.0.1.8"
EXEC "noaaportIngester -m 224.0.1.9"
EXEC "noaaportIngester -m 224.0.1.10"
EXEC "noaaportIngester -m 224.1.1.1"

Notice that last entry: that's for the NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS).
NWWS is supposed to stay up...no matter what. So, after making
sure my Novra configuration was saved to receive NOAAport, I then went
to the data sheet:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/noaaport/document/AWIPS%20Program%20Receiver%20Configuration%20v1.1.pdf

And looked at the bottom half of the sheet. It's a different modulation coding, and ISI, so I changed those on the Novra. I also added pid 201 to the list as well.

And then, I opened up another window....typed "ldmadmin watch" and held my breath. But not for long:

/home/gilbert.sebenste% ldmadmin watch
(Type ^D when finished)

Well, look at that! I saved that Novra configuration under a different
name. Now, if NOAAport goes down, I can log into the Novra using cmcs,
type "load x" sans quotes, where x is the name of my configuration file
for NWWS, and bingo! I'm on the air with text data, if nothing else. When
the outage is over, I log back into it and type "load y", where "y" is the
filename of my NOAAport reception configuration. By the way, one thing you
should know: you need to be on LDM 6.12.4 to do what I am doing. The LDM
6.12 series fixes several bugs, including two which crash the LDM...one of
them did so during a severe weather outbreak. :-(

Anyway, I hope this helps some of you as you switch over to the new feeds.
The latest LDM version is more versatile, and I'm impressed it handled NWWS flawlessly. Now, if only it could be given a different feedtype name in the LDM...

Gilbert
