Hi Ben,
thredds has not been tested on Java 9 at all. I suspect that most (all?) of
the issues we would face would center around just building the thing.
Upgrading Gradle, as you have done, is the correct way to tackle that, but
I haven't done so yet because I knew they're be plugin incompatibilities.
It's on the TODO list. I'd say that it's high priority, but not critical.
