In response to Unidata's decision to support the registry of sets of
conventions for netCDF files, we have registered our PMEL-EPIC
implentation of the netCDF format.
We registered the PMEL-EPIC Conventions by placing the PMEL-EPIC
Conventions documents, which describe our netCDF implementation, with
sample CDL files, into the Unidata ftp directory pub/netcdf/Conventions
on ftp.unidata.ucar.edu. We strongly encourage others to register
their own netCDF Conventions documents with sample CDL files, as a
service to the community utilizing netCDF.
Files with the PMEL-EPIC Conventions can be written and read with the
EPIC system library (EPS library), which is layered on top of the
netCDF library. This library is not intended to provide the complete
functionality which is available with the netCDF library, but rather to
simplify production of a standardized implementation of netCDF for
oceanographic data. It transparently provides support for some
commonly used variations on the recommended standard implementation,
and could be modified to provide support for others. It is utilized
by the EPIC system for management, display and analysis of
oceanographic data, by the TOGA-TAO Display Software, for real-time
displays of TOGA-TAO buoy data, and by nccalc, the netCDF calculator
which PMEL utilizes from within the PLOT-PLUS Scientific Graphics
package. If you have questions or comments, please do not hesitate to
