                    Unidata Program Center* Announcement
                   Training Workshop for Unidata Software
                       February 29 - March 19, 1996

The Unidata Program Center has scheduled a user training workshop for the
three week period of February 29 through March 19, 1996. The workshop will
consist of consecutive sessions devoted to Unidata application packages and
projects. We are announcing the Spring workshops well in advance of the
January 26th sign-up deadline so that you can make your plans early.

The session schedules are as follows:

February 29 - March 1: LDM (Thursday - Friday)

This will be a session for LDM Site Administrators who are already
familiar with Unix concepts. Topics covered will include how to
install and maintain the Unidata LDM. Unix concepts necessary to
the understanding of the LDM will NOT be covered in this session.
This workshop will cover the LDM, version 5 package that is due
        out the beginning of 1996.

March 3 - 9: McIDAS (Sunday - Saturday)

The seven days being set aside for the McIDAS workshop will
be segmented to focus on users with different McIDAS experience.

        March 3-4:

Introduction to basic McIDAS concepts and program use for both
OS/2 and Unix users. This session is intended for sites unfamiliar
with McIDAS and those sites wishing to review fundamental McIDAS
        concepts.

        March 5-7:

This second McIDAS training session will cover intermediate
topics such as: system installation and setup; use of shared
McIDAS facilities like the System Key Table, File Routing
Table, and File Redirection table; and installation and
configuration of the ldm-mcidas (LDM decoders for the
Unidata-Wisconsin channel products) and XCD (decoders for DDS,
PPS, IDS, and HRS data streams) packages. The final day of
this session is considered to be transitional to the advanced
session. Emphasis will focus on development of BATCH and
McBASI scripts that tie together concepts covered in the
first two days of the session.

        March 7-9:

The final McIDAS training session will cover development of
McIDAS scripts; importation of foreign data sets; manipulation
of gridded data sets; use of isentropic coordinates; and,
possibly, development of new McIDAS applications and/or
interfaces (Function Key and GUI menus). Attendees are expected
to be proficient in the use of McIDAS applications and be familiar
with Unix/OS2 facilities such as editors and compilers.

What you should sign up for:

Users needing a review of basic McIDAS concepts should sign
up for the first session, but are encouraged to sign up for
the first two sessions to get a broad understanding of
        the system.

Users intending to setup a McIDAS system for the first time
should sign up for the first and second sessions.

Users looking for advanced training should sign up for the
third session but are encouraged to sign up for the second
        session as well.

Users looking for an immersion in McIDAS should sign up for
        all three sessions.

Each session must be signed up for individually.

March 11 - 13: LDM (Monday - Wednesday)

LDM Site Administrator training for Unix novices. Besides covering
installation and maintenance of the Unidata LDM, the workshop will
start with a one-day session on Unix system administration concepts
and terminology necessary to the understanding of the LDM. This
workshop will cover the LDM, version 5 package that is due out the
        beginning of 1996.

March 14 - 16: GEMPAK (Thursday - Saturday)

How to use the GEMPAK package, including new features,
interactive and batch scripts, data files, and output drivers.
Topics to be covered will include aspects of the next GEMPAK
        release expected this winter.

March 18 - 19: Advanced WXP (Monday - Tuesday)

Advanced use of WXP (the Purdue Weather Processor) concentrating
on various analysis capabilities of the package. It will be
assumed attendees have knowledge of how WXP is set up, how WXP
works with the LDM, and can use WXP for basic analysis (surface
plots, upper air plots, etc.). It will be expected that the
attendee can create a simple C-shell script to run a WXP
        command.

Enrollment in each session will be limited to 16 people.

****NOTE: If fewer than 6 people register for a given workshop, we reserve the
right to cancel that workshop session and will notify the regis-
          trants.

The workshops will be held at the Unidata Program Center office, 3300 Mitchell
Lane, Suite 170, Boulder, Colorado 80307. Applications must be received no
later than 26 January, 1996, and will be considered on a first-come, first-
served basis. Attendance at the workshops is free; however attendees are re-
sponsible for their own travel, lodging and meals. Information on lodging and,
if necessary, on the software licensing agreement will be sent to all attendees
upon receipt and acceptance of their application.
