I believe you have to tell configure explicitly where the hdflibs are,
such as:
--with-szlib= (if you compiled with szlib)
--with-zlib=
--with-hdf5=
Try that. HTH.

Presumably this shouldn't be compiled in this configuration? Or hdf
needs to be compiled differently? Or this needs to be linked to -
