Add '--disable-shared' to 'configure' for netcdf or remove it for hdf5.
(note that I never used your compiler, so might not be the correct
solution)

Have you tried using the suggested -fPIC? I think it is enough to set also
CFLAGS=-fPIC among the whole lot of options you already use in netcdf's
./configure line.

I am not sure why I am receiving this error from HD5. Anyone have a good build
recipe for this software they care to share?
