I think I would assign each to midnight on the first of each month of the
current year, e.g., 2014-01-01 00:00:00, 2014-02-01 00:00:00,...
Easy to remember and keeps the months ordered in time-space. If your
calibration period was in a different year, it may be advisable to use
that year--you then could accommodate another calibration period in a
different year without disrupting your database.

code as GridDatasets it appears that the time coordinate variable needs to
adhere to
a conventional representation of time values with standard udunits, and it's not
clear what (if any) best practice for this is.
Can anyone advise as to how this is best represented in NetCDF for my use case?
