They are: AFOS ID WMO HEADER sent to indicated FOS service WSHPNSWSH ADMN81 KWBC Public Products Service WSHPNSFOS NOFS11 KWBC International Data Service, Domestic Data Service, Public Products Service WSHPNSNMC NOUS41 KWBC Domestic Data Service, International Data Service -------------------------------------------------------------------------- WSHPNSWSH ADMN81 KWBC 021900 NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT 200 PM EST TUE FEB 2 1993 ATTENTION: ALL NWS OFFICES, FAMILY OF SERVICES SUBSCRIBERS, NOAA WEATHER WIRE SERVICE SUBSCRIBERS, OTHER NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PRODUCT USERS ***** NOTICE ***** The Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) was commissioned by the National Weather Service at Blue Canyon, California (call letters BLU) on January 31, 1993. Commissioning of Blue Canyon means that ASOS has replaced the manual surface aviation observation formerly taken at this location with an automated surface aviation observation. Commissioning of this ASOS has expanded surface observations from 9 per day, 5 days-per-week to a 24-hour, seven-day-per-week operation. However, a human observer is still overseeing the ASOS during certain hours of the day. In addition, the Weather Service Forecast Offices in Sacramento, California and Reno, Nevada and the National Meteorological Center in Washington, D.C. are overseeing the quality of the data. NOTE: Because ASOS observational formats are different from manual observational formats, automated decoder programs may require software modifications. Persons wishing more information concerning ASOS should contact their local National Weather Service office or call (301) 713-1781, FAX (301) 713-0003. END
