NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 93-03
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS
245 PM EST FRI FEB 12 1993

TO: ALL NWS OFFICES, DOMESTIC DATA SERVICE SUBSCRIBERS

FROM: MARY M. GLACKIN
            CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH

SUBJECT: POST-PROCESSING CHANGE FOR THE NGM MOS CONDITIONAL
            PRECIPITATION TYPE FORECASTS

(THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY MARY ERICKSON OF THE
TECHNIQUES DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY.)

Effective with the 1200 UTC cycle on February 17, 1993, a change
will be made in the methods used to post-process the Nested
Grid Model (NGM)-based Model Output Statistics (MOS) conditional
precipitation type probabilities. This change will ensure that
the sum of the probability of freezing precipitation or ice
pellets and the probability of snow does not exceed 100%. The
categorical forecast of precipitation type will not be affected
by this change.

The NGM MOS conditional precipitation type guidance is available
in the FWC category for AFOS users and in the FOUS14 KWBC
bulletin for the Family of Services' Domestic Data Service
Subscribers.

For further information on the precipitation type guidance,
please see Technical Procedures Bulletin (TPB) No. 408 or contact
Mary Erickson at (301)-763-8151.
