THIS PRODUCT, FOUS22 KWBC, IS NOT DISTRIBUTED ON AFOS, NOR IS IT SENT TO PACIFIC REGION. IT DOES GO TO FAA, BUT THEY PROBABLY DON'T SEND IT TO ALSKA REGION, BECAUSE IT ONLY CONTAINS GUIDANCE FOR THE CONUS. (GARY - PERHAPS JIM JONES COULD CHECK ON THIS FOR YOU. [HE'S ALWAYS SENDING ME STUFF TO DO.]) THEREFORE, I AM SENDING THIS MESSAGE TO ALL OF YOU NWS TYPES ONLY FOR YOUR INFORMATION, IN CASE YOU GET ANY QUESTIONS. As for you Linda, the FOUS22 KWBC product IS sent on the FOS/Domestic Data Service, but I'm not sure if UNIDATA picks it up or not. Your users may or may not be affected. If they are, as stated in the message, we suggest they use FOUS14 KWBC (the NGM MOS guidance) as a replacement for the FOUS22 KWBC. If I've confused anybody, give me a call. As I said in the message, Mary Robinson and I will be sending all of you more info on the phase-out of the LFM and implementation of the Eta model on or about June 1, 1993 in mid-April. It will include a product-by-product status of each product currently being generated from the LFM. Stay tuned. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- WSHPNSNMC NOUS41 KWBC 291906 NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 93-10 NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS 200 PM EST MON MAR 29 1993 TO: USERS OF FOUS22 KWBC MESSAGE (FAA CIRCUITS, DOMESTIC DATA SUBSCRIBERS, OFFUTT AFB, ISPAN) FROM: MARY M. GLACKIN CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH SUBJECT: DISCONTINUATION OF FOUS22 KWBC MESSAGE (INFORMATION FOR THIS ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY MARY ROBINSON OF THE OFFICE OF METEOROLOGY AND PAUL DALLAVALLE OF THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY) Effective April 28, 1993, the National Weather Service (NWS) will terminate production of the FOUS22 KWBC bulletins that are now being transmitted twice a day at approximately 1400 UTC and 0200 UTC. The FOUS22 KWBC bulletins contain objective Model Output Statistics (MOS) temperature (Mx/Mn) and precipitation (PoP/PoF) forecasts for selected cities, based on the Limited-area Fine-mesh Model (LFM). This change results from the upcoming phase-out of the LFM model for the contiguous U.S., effective on or about June 1, 1993. NOTE: These products are not sent on the NWS' AFOS network, so this change does not affect NWS AFOS users. Users of the FOUS22 KWBC bulletin are referred to the FOUS14 KWBC products as a suggested replacement for this type of objective forecast guidance. The FOUS14 KWBC bulletins are transmitted at approximately 1530 UTC and 0330 UTC. FOUS14 KWBC bulletins contain MOS forecasts based on a different numerical model, the Nested Grid model (NGM), for not only temperature and precipitation, but other elements such as clouds, wind speed and direction, thunderstorm probability, ceiling height forecasts, precipitation type, etc. Information on the interpretation of the FOUS14 KWBC bulletin may be obtained by requesting a copy of Technical Procedures Bulletin (TPB) No. 408: NGM-Based MOS Guidance - The FOUS14/FWC Message. You may call (301) 713-0462 to get a copy of this bulletin. If you are a TPB subscriber, you should have already received this TPB. If you need further information on the NGM-based MOS guidance, please call Paul Dallavalle of the Techniques Development Laboratory at (301) 763-8151, or write to him at: NOAA/National Weather Service Techniques Development Laboratory, W/OSD21 5200 Auth Road, Rm. 706 Camp Springs, MD 20746 More information about the phase-out of the LFM model for the contiguous U.S. and the status of other LFM-based products will be forthcoming from the Office of Meteorology, both mailed directly to users, and via future National Technical Information Messages. If you have any questions about the phase-out of the LFM for the contiguous U.S., call Mary Robinson or Chris Alex of the Office of Meteorology at (301)-713-0462. SENT - W/OM23
