NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 93-12
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS
245 PM EDT FRI APR 23 1993

TO: NWS OFFICES, FAA CIRCUITS, DOMESTIC DATA SERVICE
            SUBSCRIBERS, OFFUTT AFB, ISPAN

FROM: MARY M. GLACKIN
            CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH

SUBJECT: DISCONTINUATION OF LFM-BASED BULLETINS FOUS22,
            FMUS44, FXUS50-53, FXUS60-61

(INFORMATION FOR THIS ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY
PAUL DALLAVALLE OF THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY)

Effective with the 1200 UTC cycle on April 28, 1993, the National
Weather Service will terminate production of the FOUS22 KWBC and
FMUS44 KWBC bulletins that are now being transmitted twice a day
at approximately 0200 and 1400 UTC. Similarly, the FXUS50 KWBC,
FXUS51 KWBC, FXUS52 KWBC, FXUS53 KWBC, FXUS60 KWBC, and FXUS61
KWBC bulletins that are transmitted daily at approximately
0200 UTC will also be terminated. Transmission of all these
bulletins is being ended as part of the upcoming phase-out of
the LFM model for the contiguous U.S. by about June 1, 1993.

Of these bulletins, only the FMUS44 is distributed on AFOS (AFOS
PIL NMCFGPW); it provides probability forecasts of the
convective gust potential for stations in the western U.S. The
FMUS44 message is distributed on the U.S. Air Force's Automated
Weather Network. No comparable product is available from the
NGM-based Model Output Statistics (MOS) system.

The FOUS22 message contains LFM-based MOS forecasts of the
maximum/minimum temperature and probability of precipitation for
selected cities in the U.S. This message is not available on
AFOS, but is disseminated to the FAA's Weather Message Switching
Center, the Family of Service's Domestic Data Service, and the
U.S. Air Force's Automated Weather Network. Comparable forecasts
from the NGM-based MOS system are available in the FOUS14 KWBC
message. Interested users are referred to Technical Procedures
Bulletin No. 408 for a complete description of this latter
bulletin.

The FXUS bulletins provide LFM-based MOS thunderstorm, severe
local storm, and tornado probability guidance for the 12- to 36-h
interval following 0000 UTC. Technical Procedures Bulletin No.
199 describes these products, which are disseminated only to the
U.S. Air Force's Automated Weather Network. Comparable LFM-based
MOS guidance for thunderstorms and severe local storms is
available on DIFAX chart D143 issued at approximately 1300 UTC
during the April 16 - September 16 period. [This DIFAX chart
will continue to be generated from the LFM until an NGM
replacement is developed later this year.] Year-round NGM-based
MOS thunderstorm and local severe thunderstorm guidance is
available in the FOUS14 message mentioned previously and is
described in Technical Procedures Bulletin Nos. 407 and 408.

If you need further information on the NGM-based MOS guidance,
please call Paul Dallavalle of the Techniques Development
Laboratory at (301) 763-8151, or write to him at:

NOAA/National Weather Service
Techniques Development Laboratory, W/OSD21
5200 Auth Road, Rm. 706
Camp Springs, MD 20746

More information about the phase-out of the LFM model for the
contiguous U.S. and the status of other LFM-based products will
be forthcoming from the Office of Meteorology, both mailed
directly to users, and via future National Technical Information
Messages.

If you have any questions about the phase-out of the LFM for the
contiguous U.S., call Mary Robinson or Chris Alex of the Office
of Meteorology at (301)-713-0462.

(INFORMATION FOR THIS ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY
PAUL DALLAVALLE OF THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY)

Effective with the 1200 UTC cycle on April 28, 1993, the
National Weather Service will replace LFM-based MOS maximum/
minimum (max/min) temperature forecasts given in the NMCFTPWR
message with NGM-based MOS max/min temperature forecasts.
This message is available only to NWS users. On AFOS, the
message is available as the NMCFTPWR product; on the ISPAN data
feed, it is available under the WMO header FOUS33 KWBC.

This alphanumeric product contains forecasts for the 24- through

generated at 0200 and 1400 UTC. Conversion of this bulletin is
part of the effort to eliminate the LFM model guidance for the
contiguous U.S. by about June 1, 1993.
