Forwarded message: Posted: Fri, Apr 30, 1993 9:24 AM EDT Msg: HGJD-5669-5518 Subj: ASOS commissioning notice I sent the following message on AFOS, FOS, NWWS, etc. yesterday, under 3 different WMO headers (ADMN81 KWBC, NOFS11 KWBC, and NOUS41 KWBC), each of which has a slightly different distribution. ___________________________________________________________________________ WSHPNSNMC NOUS41 KWBC 291959 NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT 400 PM EDT THU APR 29 1993 ATTENTION: ALL NWS OFFICES, FAMILY OF SERVICES SUBSCRIBERS, NOAA WEATHER WIRE SERVICE SUBSCRIBERS, OTHER NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PRODUCT USERS ***** NOTICE ***** The Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) will be commissioned by the National Weather Service at Baton Rouge, Louisiana (call letters BTR) and Wichita Falls, Texas (call letters SPS) on May 1, 1993. Commissioning of the ASOSes at these sites means that ASOS will replace the manual surface aviation observation currently being taken at these locations with an automated surface aviation observation. However, a human observer is still overseeing the ASOS and editing the observation as needed. In addition, the Weather Service Forecast Offices responsible for these sites and the National Meteorological Center in Washington, D.C. are overseeing the quality of the data. NOTE: Because ASOS observational formats are different from manual observational formats, automated decoder programs may require software modifications. Persons wishing more information concerning ASOS should contact their local National Weather Service office or call (301) 713-1781, FAX (301) 713-0003.
