Subj: 2 NTIMs and an Eta update
All of you should have already gotten (or will receive momentarily) your "Dear
Colleague" packages about the upcoming LFM/Eta changes. For Ken, Dan, and
Dick, you should each have received two large boxes, one containing the 5 page
cover letter and the second containing a 15 page Table. You need to send one
of each to all of your offices. [NOTE: This is because we used the TPB
mailing list, and that's how the distribution is set up for CR, SR, and WR.
We direct-mail TPBs to offices in the other regions. Whenever things here
settle down a little more, I'll coordinate with Ken, Dan, and Dick to see if
you're interested in changing to a direct mail system from here...) The
other regions I have taken care of the external users. If anyone needs extra
copies of the package, just let me know. I ordered many extras, just in case.

To update you on the TPB situation, I sent it to the printer today, in the
final, desk-top published format. It should begin being distributed around
May 26th. Again, this was a two-part printing job, due to the length (31
pages, but it's mostly figures). The two parts will be distributed together.
So, Ken, Dan, and Dick again will receive two boxes (one for the first 16
pages, and the second for the next 16 pages), which should be redistributed
from your mail rooms ASAP in order to get it out as much before June 8th as
you can. Again, if you need extra copies, let me know.

NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 93-16
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS
200 PM EDT WED MAY 19 1993

TO: ALL NWS AFOS OFFICES

FROM: MARY M. GLACKIN
            CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH

SUBJECT: NEW NGM-BASED GRIDDED THUNDERSTORM DATA FOR THE
            STATE OF FLORIDA

(INFORMATION FOR THIS ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY
RON REAP OF THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY)

Effective with the 1200 UTC cycle on May 26, 1993, the National
Weather Service will add two new gridded products containing
thunderstorm probability forecasts for Florida. These products
will only be distributed on AFOS with the following identifiers:
NMCGRDFL1 and NMCGRDFL2. The products will be generated at
approximately 0400 and 1600 UTC and will be initially available
on the Southern Region loop of the AFOS network. The products
contain thunderstorm probabilities for the 18-30 hr (0000 UTC)
(NMCGRDFL1) and 30-42 h projection (1200 UTC) (NMCGRDFL2). The
forecasts are generated from NGM forecast fields and
climatological lightning data. They represent the probability of
two or more cloud-to-ground lightning flashes per 12-km grid
block.

Since the products are gridded data, they cannot be directly
displayed on the AFOS system. An applications program designed
to unpack, contour, and display the gridded forecasts in
graphical form is currently under development at TDL and should
be completed in the near future. A followup National Technical
Information Message will be issued to alert users when the
applications program is available at NWS regional offices. In
addition, efforts are ongoing to add the gridded thunderstorm
products to the Central Region AFOS loop. Users will be notified
via an AFOS Change Notice when this change occurs.

If you need further information on the gridded forecasts for
Florida, please call Ron Reap of the Techniques Development
Laboratory at (301) 713-1772, or write to him at:

NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 93-17
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS
200 PM EDT WED MAY 19 1993

TO: NWS OFFICES, AFOS GRAPHICS SERVICE SUBSCRIBERS,
            DIFAX SUBSCRIBERS

FROM: MARY M. GLACKIN
            CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH

SUBJECT: ADDITIONAL TRAJECTORY MODEL GRAPHICS TO BE CHANGED
            FROM LFM-BASED TO NGM-BASED

(INFORMATION FOR THIS ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY
PAUL DALLAVALLE OF THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY)

Effective with the 1200 UTC cycle on May 26, 1993, the National
Weather Service will replace the AFOS and DIFAX graphics products
that contain forecasts of the LFM-based trajectory model with
graphics products containing forecasts of the NGM-based
trajectory model. The products containing forecast parcel
trajectories are distributed on AFOS with the following
identifiers: NMCGPH0WJ, NMCGPH8WJ, NMCGPH7WJ, NMCGPH0W1,
NMCGPH8W1, and NMCGPH7W1. These products contain the 24-h
forecasts of parcel trajectories terminating at the surface, at
850 mb, and at 700 mb in the eastern U.S.; and at the surface, at
850 mb, and at 700 mb in the western U.S., respectively. A
four-panel chart containing forecasts of parcel trajectories,
temperatures, dew points, the K-index, and the 700-mb net
vertical displacement is transmitted over the DIFAX circuit in
slot D074 at approximately 0420 UTC and in slot D218 at
approximately 1624 UTC. All of these products will contain
forecasts based on the NGM trajectory model. Note that the
NGM-based guidance will be generated at approximately 0400 and
1600 UTC.

Technical Procedures Bulletin No. 397 describes the trajectory
model and the graphics products. Conversion of these products is
part of the continuing effort to implement the Early Eta model
and to phase-out the LFM guidance for the contiguous U.S.

If you need further information on the trajectory model, please
call Ron Reap of the Techniques Development Laboratory at
(301) 713-1772, or write to him at:

NOAA/National Weather Service
Techniques Development Laboratory, W/OSD23
1325 East West Hwy #10380
Silver Spring, MD 20910

If you have any questions about the phase-out of the LFM for the
contiguous U.S., call Mary Robinson or Chris Alex of the Office
of Meteorology at (301)-713-0462.
