SUBJECT:          REMOVAL OF GFUS20-55 BULLETINS       

(INFORMATION FOR THIS ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PROVIDED BY MARY
NEWTON OF THE OFFICE OF METEOROLOGY)

ON TUESDAY, JUNE 08, 1993, AT 1200 UTC, THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE WILL CEASE GENERATION OF THE GFUS20-55 BULLETINS.  THE
GFUS BULLETINS ARE ASCII CODED FORECAST OF WIND SPEED AND
DIRECTION AND TEMPERATURE FOR THE LIMITED-AREA FINE-MESH MODEL
(LFM) GRID POINTS ON THE MARSDEN SQUARE GRID.  THESE PRODUCTS ARE
NO LONGER REQUIRED BY THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA),
THE INTENDED USERS OF THE BULLETINS.

THIS CHANGE IS BEING MADE AS PART OF THE PHASEOUT OF THE LFM
MODEL AND THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ETA MODEL ALSO SET FOR
1200 UTC, JUNE 08, 1993.    

QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS CHANGE OR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PHASE-OUT

SUBJECT:          ETA MODEL IMPLEMENTATION/PHASE-OUT OF THE       
                  LIMITED-AREA FINE MESH (LFM)      

REFERENCE:        W/OM23:MCR LETTER DATED MAY 11, 1993


EFFECTIVE 1200 UTC, ON JUNE 8, 1993, AS PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED, THE
NWS WILL REPLACE THE LIMITED-AREA FINE MESH (LFM) MODEL WITH A NEW
WEATHER PREDICTION MODEL CALLED THE EARLY ETA MODEL.  THIS VERSION
OF THE ETA MODEL, WHICH CONSISTS OF 38 LAYERS IN THE VERTICAL AND
AN 80-KM HORIZONTAL GRID, WILL PROVIDE AN IMPROVED EARLY LOOK AT
THE SYNOPTIC SCALE FORECAST COMPARED TO THE LFM.

WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ETA MODEL, MOST PRODUCTS THAT ARE
CURRENTLY GENERATED FROM THE LFM WILL BE DERIVED FROM EITHER THE
ETA MODEL OR THE NESTED GRID MODEL (NGM).  A TECHNICAL PACKAGE
IDENTIFYING EVERY LFM-BASED PRODUCT, AND ITS DISPOSITION WITH THE
ETA IMPLEMENTATION, WAS MAILED TO NWS EMPLOYEES AND NUMEROUS
EXTERNAL USERS.  PLEASE REFER TO THIS PACKAGE (SEE REFERENCE) FOR
DETAILS ON AFFECTED LFM-BASED PRODUCTS.
