MACHOWSKI ACTING CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH SUBJECT: SCHEDULED POWER OUTAGE AT THE NOAA SCIENCE CENTER (NSC) (THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY ROBERT DEROUIN, DEPUTY CHIEF OF THE METEOROLOGICAL OPERATIONS DIVISION AT NMC). TODAY, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1993, THE NOAA SCIENCE CENTER LOCATED IN CAMP SPRINGS, MD (AND "HOME" OF THE NATIONAL METEOROLOGICAL CENTER) WILL EXPERIENCE A POWER OUTAGE FROM APPROXIMATELY 3:00 PM TO 6:30 PM EST (OR 1900Z TO 2330Z). THE OUTAGE IS NECESSARY TO ALLOW ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON A MOTOR GENERATOR USED TO CONVERT FROM COMMERCIAL TO BACKUP POWER AND VICE VERSA. THE NMC MAINFRAME COMPUTERS (HDS 9000 AND CRAY) WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY THIS OUTAGE. ALTHOUGH THE TIME OF THE OUTAGE WAS SET TO MINIMIZE THE IMPACT ON OPERATIONS, THERE WILL BE SOME DELAYED, AND POSSIBLY SOME MISSED, MANUALLY GENERATED GRAPHICS, SUCH AS THE 18Z/21Z SURFACE ANALYSIS, HIGH AND LOW LEVEL AVIATION FORECASTS, ETC. IF POSSIBLE, SOME OF THE MISSED CHARTS WILL BE RE-TRANSMITTED ONCE THE WORK ON THE GENERATOR HAS BEEN COMPLETED. A SECOND OUTAGE WILL BE REQUIRED AND WILL BE SCHEDULED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE PURPOSE OF THE SECOND OUTAGE WILL BE TO ALLOW GSA TO PERFORM ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON CONFIGURATION COMPONENTS THROUGHOUT THE NSC. MESSAGES ON THE START AND CONCLUSION OF THE TEST, AND NOTIFICATION CONCERNING THE SECOND OUTAGE, WILL BE ADVERTISED VIA THE NORMAL STATUS MESSAGES SENT BY THE SENIOR DUTY METEOROLOGIST (SDM) AT NMC (AFOS IDENTIFIER NFDADMNFD; WMO HEADER ADMN9 RWRA).
