The commissioning event occurred at approximately 12 AM local at each of these sites. This brings the total number of ASOSes commissioned to 35. Commissioning of these ASOSes means that ASOS replaced the manual observations being transmitted with automated, around-the-clock surface aviation observations. The NWS forecast offices responsible for these sites, as well as the ASOS Operation and Monitoring Center (AOMC) in Silver Spring, Maryland, will monitor ASOS products generated from these sites and coordinate maintenance actions as needed. In addition, the National Meteorological Center in Washington, D.C. will oversee the quality of the data. NOTE: Because ASOS observational formats are different from manual observational formats, automated decoder programs may require software modifications. Persons wishing more information concerning ASOS should contact their local National Weather Service office or call (301) 713-1781, FAX (301) 713-0003. This brings the total of commissioned NWS WSR-88D radars to eight. NOTE: The seventh NWS WSR-88D to be commissioned was at Phoenix, Arizona (call letters IWA) on April 27, 1994. Commissioning means that these radars are now issuing products, such as the Radar Observation (AFOS category ROB) message, in an official capacity. Also, products from the NEXRAD Information Dissemination Service no longer have an experimental or test label appended to them. Persons wishing more information concerning the WSR-88D should contact their local National Weather Service office or call (301) 713-0070. END ------- End of Forwarded Message
