NEWTON ACTING CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH SUBJECT: CHANGES IN FORMAT FOR NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PRODUCTS REFERENCE: NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGES 94-09, 94-15, AND 94-16 DATED APRIL 20, 1994, MAY 23, 1994, AND JUNE 14, 1994 (THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY HOWARD DIAMOND, OFFICE OF SYSTEMS OPERATIONS) NOTE TO AFOS AND NWWS USERS: THE FOLLOWING NOTICE WILL HAVE NO IMPACT TO EITHER NWS AFOS OFFICES OR TO NWWS USERS. The 6-hour test of the new second line of text (NNNXXX) for NWS field generated products was SUCCESSFULLY conducted on June 16, 1994, from 1100 hours UTC to 1700 hours UTC with NO problems reported by any users. For a review of the format change, please refer to National Technical Information Messages 94-09, 94-15, 94-16, and the "Dear Colleague" letter dated May 26, 1994, which was direct-mailed (hard copy) to a wide audience of users. As a result of this successful test, the format change will be NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 94-20 NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS 200 PM EDT TUE JUL 12 1994 TO: ALL USERS OF NWS UPPER AIR DATA FROM: MARY C. NEWTON ACTING CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH SUBJECT: UPPER AIR STATION MOVE FROM HATTERAS, NC TO MOREHEAD CITY/NEWPORT, NC Effective July 18, 1994, at 1200 Universal Coordinated Time (UTC), the upper air program at Weather Service Office (WSO) Hatteras, NC (location identifier HAT), will begin moving to NEXRAD Weather Service Office (NWSO) Morehead City/Newport, NC (location identifier MHX). The last upper air observation at WSO Hatteras will be taken at 1200 UTC on July 18, 1994. The first upper air observation at NWSO Morehead City/Newport will be taken at 1200 UTC on July 21, 1994. The move is expected to take 3 days, and no upper-air data will be available until the move is completed. In conjunction with this change, the product identifier (XXX) for the 4 upper air products will change from HAT to MHX. The node (CCC) for these products will remain RDU (see below). The block and station id will change from 72304 to 72305, and the WBAN number will change from w93729 to wn9307. NOTE: AFOS users will have to update their data bases and any software or data files which key on the HAT upper air identifier. FROM: MARY C. Effective July 12, 1994, at 0000 Universal Coordinated Time (UTC), the upper air program at Weather Service Meteorological Observatory (WSMO) Stephenville, TX (location identifier SEP), will move to Weather Service Forecast Office (WSFO) Fort Worth, TX (location identifier FWD). The last upper air observations at WSMO Stephenville will be taken at 1200 hours UTC on July 11, 1994. In conjunction with this change, the location identifier (XXX) for the 4 upper air products listed below will change from SEP to FWD. The node (CCC) for these products will remain FTW. The block and station id will change from 72260 to 72249, and the WBAN number will change from 13901 to 03990. NOTE: AFOS users will have to update their data bases and any software or data files which key on the SEP identifier. Users of WMO headers will not see a change in the communication identifier, but may have to adapt software or data files to accommodate the new location.
