NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 94-37 NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS 1100 AM EDT TUE AUG 30 1994 TO: ALL NWS OFFICES, DOMESTIC DATA SERVICE SUBSCRIBERS, FAA USERS AND THE FAA WEATHER MESSAGE SWITCHING CENTER FROM: RICH PRZYWARTY ACTING CHIEF, SERVICES DEVELOPMENT BRANCH SUBJECT: SUMMARY OF IMPLEMENTATIONS REGARDING MOS PRODUCTS, WHICH WILL BECOME EFFECTIVE ON SEPTEMBER 1, 1994 (THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED BY J. PAUL DALLAVALLE AND JOHN JENSENIUS OF THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY, AND CHRISTINE ALEX OF THE OFFICE OF METEOROLOGY.) Effective at 0000 UTC on Thursday, September 1, 1994, several changes to MRF-based products, will be implemented. These changes are summarized below: 1) Three new Medium-Range Forecast model (MRF)-based MOS guidance collectives will be implemented. The new collectives will be for the future NWS Warning Forecast Offices in Greenville, South Carolina; Marquette, Michigan; and Paducah, Kentucky. The identifiers are: AFOS hdr (WMO header) cccFMRGSP (FOXE61 KWBC) - Containing forecasts for: GSP - Greenville, SC CLT - Charlotte, NC cccFMRMQT (FOXC74 KWBC) - Containing forecasts for: MQT - Marquette, MI cccFMRPAH (FOXC75 KWBC) - Containing forecasts for: PAH - Paducah, KY The guidance for Marquette and Paducah is new (i.e. neither the collectives nor the forecasts for these cities have previously been available). The guidance for Greenville, SC, and Charlotte, NC, is simply being moved from an existing collective (AFOS header FMRCAE; WMO header added FOXE45 KWBC) to the new collective FMRGSP (FOXE61 KWBC). Refer to National Technical Information Message 94-21, dated July 18, 1994, for more information on this item. Also, refer to Technical Procedures Bulletin 411 ("The MRF-Based Statistical Guidance Message") and the associated yellow reference card. The Appendix (list of stations) to TPB 411 and the yellow card will be updated in the next month or so to reflect all of the changes to the MRF-based MOS guidance. 2) Several additional cities are being added to existing MRF MOS collectives. Only maximum and minimum temperature guidance will be available for the cities being added to existing collectives. Refer to NTIM 94-21, issued July 18, 1994, for the complete list of stations being added to existing bulletins. 3) A minor change in the format of the MRF MOS message will be implemented. In the heading line that begins with the station call letters, the month will be replaced by the day of the week. For example: ALB DEC 08| DEC 09| DEC 10| DEC 11| DEC 12| DEC 13| ... will be replaced by ALB SUN 08| MON 09| TUE 10| WED 11| THU 12| FRI 13| ... 4) The WMO header for the Alaskan MRF MOS guidance message will change from FOUS20 KWBC to FOAK20 KWBC. This change will not affect AFOS users (the Alaskan MRF MOS guidance is not available on the AFOS network). 5) A new message containing MRF-based statistical daytime maximum and nighttime minimum temperature forecasts for 12 Canadian cities will be implemented. The AFOS header will be FMRCND; the WMO header will be FECN21 KWBC. Forecasts for the following stations will be contained in the message: WLF - Lansdowne House, OT YEG - Edmonton, AB YPA - Prince Albert, SK YQB - Quebec, QE YQD - The Pas, MB YQR - Regina, SK YQT - Thunder Bay, OT YVR - Vancouver, BC YWG - Winnipeg, MB YXS - Prince George, BC YYB - North Bay, OT YYC - Calgary, AB Refer to NTIM 94-22, dated July 18, 1994, or NTIM 94-26, dated July 20, 1994, for more information on this item. If you have any questions concerning any of these changes, see the referenced National Technical Information Messages (AFOS header WSHPNSNMC; WMO header NOUS41 KWBC), or call Paul Dallavalle or John Jensenius at 301-763-8151 or Chris Alex at 301-713-0462.
