ZCZC WSHADAWSH ALL TTAA00 KWSH DDHHMM ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS WASHINGTON DC 130 PM EST WED DEC 28 1994 TO: ALL NWS OFFICES AND NWS EMPLOYEES FROM: JAMES P. TRAVERS, CHIEF, OPERATIONS DIVISION, OFFICE OF METEOROLOGY SUBJECT: ULTRAVIOLET INDEX (UVI) DISSEMINATION Effective immediately, offices may discontinue broadcasts of UVI on NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) during the winter due to generally low UVI values. Some offices in subtropical areas may want to continue these broadcasts through the winter, depending on local factors and user needs. NWR broadcasts of UVI generally should resume nationwide approximately Monday, April 3, 1995. Some offices may resume these broadcasts at an earlier or later date according to local factors and user needs. There will be no discontinuance of the UVI on other dissemination systems. The Climate Analysis Center of NMC will continue to issue the experimental national UVI product once a day around 1800 UTC for the 58 cities. This product is transmitted on AFOS/NOAA Weather Wire under the identifier NMCUVICAC and the Family of Services under AEUS41 KWBC. The UVI product is expected to become official (no longer experimental) on April 3. The "beta" tests at several forecast offices to demonstrate skill in local adaptive forecasting of the UVI with same-day morning update will resume next year. END
