WSHPNSWSH ADMN81 KWBC 042135 PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS WASHINGTON DC 435 PM EST FRI FEB 4 1994 TO: FAMILY OF SERVICES (FOS) SUBSCRIBERS, NOAA WEATHER WIRE SERVICE (NWWS) SUBSCRIBERS, OTHER NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) PRODUCT USERS, NWS EMPLOYEES FROM: DONALD R. WERNLY, CHIEF, WARNING AND FORECAST BRANCH SUBJECT: HOUSTON, TEXAS NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE'S SHORT-FUSE COUNTY WARNING AREA EXPANDS...EFFECTIVE APRIL 5, 1994 With the installation, activation, and pending commissioning of the Doppler Weather Surveillance Radar (WSR-88D) at the Houston Area National Weather Service Office, the official warning responsibility for several southeast Texas counties, and adjacent coastal waters, as appropriate, will soon change. Effective Tuesday, April 5, 1994, at 10:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time, the National Weather Service (NWS) will transfer short-fuse warning responsibility for six (6) counties (Table 1) TO the Houston Area (HOU) Weather Service Office (WSO) FROM Weather Service Offices (WSO) in Austin, TX (AUS), Galveston, TX (GLS), Victoria, TX (VCT), and Waco, TX (ACT). This transfer will also give WSO HOU short-fuse marine warning responsibility for adjoining coastal waters of Chambers, Galveston, and Jackson Counties. For these counties and coastal waters, WSO HOU will issue short- fuse warnings (Table 2) and related products that provide followup information on the warnings (Table 3). For holders of NWS Operations Manual Chapter C-47, County Warning Areas, this transfer is the third update of 1994. Because of this transfer, subscribers to the NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS) and the Family of Services (FOS) must take appropriate action to receive the short-fuse warnings and related products for these counties and adjoining coastal waters using the HOU identifier (Tables 2 and 3) instead of the AUS, GLS, VCT, or ACT identifiers. The Universal Generic Codes (UGC), however, will remain unchanged (as shown in Table 1). Effective Tuesday, April 5, 1994, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the National Weather Service (NWS) will transfer short-fuse warning responsibility for four (4) counties (Table 1) TO the Melbourne (MLB) Weather Service Office (WSO) FROM Weather Service Offices (WSO) in Daytona Beach, FL (DAB), and West Palm Beach, FL (PBI). This transfer will also give WSO MLB short-fuse marine warning responsibility for adjoining coastal waters of Martin, St. Lucie, and Volusia Counties. For these counties and coastal waters, WSO MLB will issue short- fuse warnings (Table 2) and related products that provide followup information on the warnings (Table 3). For holders of NWS Operations Manual Chapter C-47, County Warning Areas, this transfer is the fourth update of 1994. Because of this transfer, subscribers to the NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS) and the Family of Services (FOS) must take appropriate action to receive the short-fuse warnings and related products for these counties and adjoining coastal waters using the MLB identifier (Tables 2 and 3) instead of the DAB or PBI identifiers. EFFECTIVE MARCH 1, 1994 Effective March 1, 1994 at 10:00 a.m Eastern Standard Time, the National Weather Service (NWS) will transfer short-fuse warning responsibility for four counties in Virginia and five counties in West Virginia (Table 1) TO the Sterling (WBC), Washington DC Weather Service Forecast Office (WSFO) FROM the Elkins (EKN), West Virginia Weather Service Office (WSO) and the Richmond (RIC) Virginia WSO. For these counties, WSFO WBC will issue short-fuse warning products (Table 2) and related products that give followup information on the warnings (Table 3). For holders of NWS Operations Manual Chapter C-47, County Warning Areas, this transfer is the fifth 1994 update of the latest chapter issuance. Because of this county warning transfer, subscribers to the NOAA Weather Wire Service (NWWS) and the Family of Services (FOS) must take appropriate action to receive the short-fuse warnings and related products for these nine counties using the WBC identifier (Tables 2 and 3) instead of the EKN and RIC identifiers. The Universal Generic Codes (UGC), however, will remain unchanged (as shown in Table 1). However, to ensure that every user has enough time to make the necessary changes, the WSFO WBC will issue warning products under BOTH the old identifiers (EKN and RIC) and new identifier (WBC) until 10:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, April 5, 1994. After that time, only the new identifier (WBC) will be used. 1. County/Ind. This is a convenient summary of ski conditions for a majority of ski areas all across the country. The reports are transmitted twice a day via a connection to the Weather Service Forecast Office at Albany, New York. The reports are available in the AFOS and NWWS identifier ALBRECALB and WMO header FWUS1 KALB at approximately 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. eastern time. The 6 a.m. report is not as complete as the 4 p.m. report. SCR collects and transmits data each day of the ski season from mid-October to mid-May, or until 10 or fewer ski areas in the country are open.
