791 ABUS34 KSFO 111600 PNSSFO PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN FRANCISCO CA 8 AM PST MON DEC 11 1995 ...Discontinuance of USGS Bay Area Landslide Warning System... The U.S. Geological Survey has recently discontinued the Bay Area Landslide Warning System due to Federal budgetary cutbacks. However...the National Weather Service will continue to provide information on potential and impending flash flood events as well as other weather events. Previously, when conditions for soil moisture content and geologic factors met established criteria, USGS scientists would declare a warning or watch for a possible landslide or debris flow. As a cooperating agency, the National Weather Service would disseminate the USGS warnings to the public on NOAA Weather Radio, NOAA Weather Wire Service, and the NWS Family of Services, a system used to disseminate NWS information to the private sector. If you have questions about the elimination of the Bay Area Landslide Warnings stem, please contact Robert Fleming, USGS Landslide Program in Boulder, Colorado (303)-273-8603. If you have questions about NWS forecasts, please call the NWS office in Monterey at (408-656-1710).
