DURING ITS JOURNEY...WHICH WILL LAST FOR 84 DAYS...THE TORCH WILL BE CARRIED 15000 MILES BY 10000 RUNNERS. TO HELP INSURE THE SAFETY OF THE RUNNERS...THE SPECTATORS...AND THE OFFICIALS ESCORTING THE TORCH DURING ITS RELAY ACROSS THE NATION...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS...AND IS PROVIDING TWO LEVELS OF WEATHER SUPPORT FOR THE RELAY. PRIOR TO THE ARRIVAL OF THE OLYMPIC FLAME IN THE UNITED STATES...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICES ACROSS THE COUNTRY PROVIDED THE ATLANTA COMMITTEE FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES /ACOG/ WITH CLIMATOLOGICAL INFORMATION FOR MANY POINTS ALONG THE RELAY ROUTE. INCLUDED WAS AVERAGE MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM TEMPERATURES ...AVERAGE WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION...AVERAGE NUMBER OF DAYS WHEN PRECIPITATION MIGHT BE EXPECTED...AND RECORD MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM TEMPERATURES. THE NWS'S NATIONAL CENTERS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PREDICTION STORM PREDICTION CENTER PROVIDED STATISTICS REGARDING THE LIKELIHOOD OF SEVERE WEATHER OCCURRING ALONG THE RELAY ROUTE. SINCE THE TORCH RELAY BEGAN ON APRIL 27TH...AND CONTINUING UNTIL THE TORCH REACHES THE OLYMPIC STADIUM IN ATLANTA ON JULY 19TH ...FORECASTERS AT THE NWS/S STORM PREDICTION CENTER WILL BE MONITORING THE WEATHER ALONG THE RELAY ROUTE 24 HOURS A DAY...KEEPING WATCH FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF SEVERE WEATHER. IN THE EVENT SEVERE WEATHER IS EITHER ANTICIPATED OR IS ONGOING...THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER/S FORECASTERS WILL PROVIDE BRIEFINGS TO ACOG OFFICIALS SO APPROPRIATE MEASURES CAN BE TAKEN TO PROTECT THE RUNNERS...
