EFFECTIVE JULY 10 1996...THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN...OKLAHOMA...WILL BEGIN A TEST OF A NEW PRODUCT CALLED THE HAZARDOUS WEATHER UPDATE. THESE HAZARDOUS WEATHER UPDATES WILL PROVIDE FORECASTS /OUT TO APPROXIMATELY 12 HOURS/ OF HAZARDOUS WEATHER AFFECTING THE CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES. THE PURPOSE OF THE HAZARDOUS WEATHER UPDATE WILL BE TO PROVIDE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICES...OTHER FEDERAL AND STATE AGENCIES...EMERGENCY MANAGERS...AND THE MEDIA...WITH AN OVERVIEW OF MAJOR ON-GOING STORM SYSTEMS AND OTHER HAZARDOUS WEATHER EVENTS THAT HAVE REGIONAL OR NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE. THE HAZARDOUS WEATHER UPDATE WILL BE A NON-SCHEDULED PRODUCT...AND WILL BE ISSUED ONLY WHEN HAZARDOUS WEATHER AFFECTS MAJOR PORTIONS OF THE COUNTRY. THE TYPES OF HAZARDOUS WEATHER TO BE COVERED INCLUDE SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND TORNADOES...LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN AND FLASH FLOODING...HEAVY SNOW...BLIZZARDS... ICESTORMS...DANGEROUS WIND CHILL OR HEAT INDEX TEMPERATURES. THE HAZARDOUS WEATHER UPDATE WILL CONTAIN A GENERAL FORECAST OF WHERE THE STORM SYSTEMS WILL MOVE...AND ITS ANTICIPATED IMPACT. IT WILL ALSO INCLUDE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF WEATHER WATCHES...WARNINGS AND ADVISORIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE STORM SYSTEM...AND WILL INCLUDE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT HAZARDOUS WEATHER REPORTS RECEIVED SINCE THE LAST UPDATE. THE HAZARDOUS WEATHER UPDATES WILL APPEAR IN AFOS/NWWS IDENTIFIERS MKCHWU01 THROUGH MKCHWU09. FOR WMO/FOS...THESE WILL ALL BE FOUND UNDER THE HEADER OF WWUS43 KMKC. HAZARDOUS WEATHER UPDATES FOR A STORM WILL USE THE SAME AFOS IDENTIFIER FOR THE LIFE OF THAT STORM. EACH TIME A SET OF HAZARDOUS WEATHER UPDATES IS INITIATED FOR A NEW STORM...THE FINAL DIGIT OF THE IDENTIFIER WILL BE INCREASED FROM THAT OF THE PREVIOUS STORM SYSTEM. THE TEST WILL LAST APPROXIMATELY ELEVEN MONTHS...ENDING IN MAY 1997. DURING THAT TIME...FEEDBACK FROM NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICES...EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT...AND THE MEDIA WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE THE UTILITY AND FORMAT OF THIS PRODUCT. ONLY AFTER COMPLETION OF THE TEST WILL IT BE DETERMINED IF THE HAZARDOUS WEATHER UPDATE IS TO BECOME ONE OF THE SUITE OF PRODUCTS ISSUED BY THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER. END NNNN
