AFTER TELEMETRY WAS REESTABLISHED...SOCC CONTROLLERS...PER APPROVED CONTINGENCY PROCEDURES...PLACED GOES-8 IN SAFE HOLD WHICH POINTS THE SOLAR ARRAY AT THE SUN FOR MAXIMUM POWER. GOES-8 IS IN A STABLE ATTITUDE...SUN POINTING AND NOT PROVIDING ENVIRONMENTAL DATA. ALL USER OPERATIONS...INCLUDING PRIMARY IMAGING AND SOUNDING FUNCTIONS WILL BE CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. TO FILL THE DATA VOID...GOES-9 FULL DISK OPERATIONS WILL COMMENCE AT 1600 UTC. EQUIVALENT GOES-8 GOES-TAP PRODUCTS WILL BE GENERATED FROM GOES-9 FULL DISK DATA AND DISSEMINATED ON GOES-8 CIRCUITS. CURRENTLY...THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE IS BELIEVED TO BE SOME TYPE OF ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE /ESD/ THAT HAS CAUSED ATTITUDE AND ORBIT CONTROL ELECTRONICS /AOCE 2/ TO MALFUNCTION. NESDIS SATELLITE OPERATIONS CONTROL CENTER ENGINEERS ARE DILIGENTLY ANALYZING THE SITUATION AND WORKING TOWARDS A SPEEDY RECOVERY. IF ALL GOES WELL AND THERE IS NO PERMANENT DAMAGE...GOES-8 CAN BE RETURNED TO FULL SERVICE WITHIN 24 HOURS.
