541 NOUS40 KWBC 121503 NOAAPORT NOTICE NO. 1118 SEPTEMBER 12... 1997 SUBJECT IMPENDING CHANGES IN NOAAPORT SATELLITE BROADCAST SYSTEM THIS IS AN UPDATE ON THE STATUS OF CERTAIN CHANGES TO BE MADE IN THE NOAAPORT SATELLITE BROADCAST SYSTEM. PREVIOUS E-MAILINGS HAVE PROVIDED ADVANCE INFORMATION ON THE PROPOSED INTRODUCTION OF THE REED-SOLOMON FORWARD ERROR CORRECTION CODING SCHEME AND THE CAPABILITY FOR DATA PRODUCT RETRANSMISSION. BOTH OF THESE FEATURES WILL BE INTRODUCED BUT THEIR SCHEDULED RELEASE DATE HAS BEEN DELAYED. THE ORIGINAL SCHEDULE FOR CONVERSION TO THE REED-SOLOMON CODING SCHEME CALLED FOR A TRANSITION DURING SEPTEMBER 1997. DELAYS HAVE BEEN ENCOUNTERED HOWEVER IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THE REPLACEMENT DEMODULATOR /EFDATA MODEL SDR54A/ REQUIRED TO MODIFY THE RECEIVING SYSTEMS. TO ALLOW SUFFICIENT TIME FOR TESTING OF THE PRODUCTION MODELS OF THE DEMODULATOR AND TO AVOID INTERFERING WITH OTHER AWIPS TEST ACTIVITIES IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO DEFER THE TRANSITION TO THE REED-SOLOMON CODING UNTIL LATE NOVEMBER 1997 WITH THE EXACT SCHEDULE TO BE ANNOUNCED LATER. THE NOAAPORT BROADCAST SYSTEM REFERENCE DOCUMENTATION IS BEING UPDATED TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL DETAILS ON THE REED-SOLOMON CODING AND ALL OTHER CHANGES WHICH HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE SYSTEM DESIGN AND WHEN PUBLISHED MAY BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE NOAAPORT WEB SITE ON THE INTERNET. THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION IS STILL AVAILABLE ON THE PRESENT ADDRESS FOR THE WEB SITE AT HTTP //WWW.NNIC.NOAA.GOV/NOAAPORT/HTML/NOAAPORT.HTML NOTE HOWEVER THAT THIS INTERNET ADDRESS WILL BE CHANGED IN THE NEAR FUTURE AND THE NEW ADDRESS WILL BE POSTED AT THE PRESENT SITE AND ALSO PROVIDED IN A FUTURE MAILING. THE NEW WEB SITE WILL BE ESTABLISHED COINCIDENT WITH THE REVISED REFERENCE DOCUMENTATION. THE AWIPS SOFTWARE RELEASE 2.1 WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR AWIPS FIELD SITES TO REQUEST RETRANSMISSION OF MISSING SATELLITE BROADCAST NETWORK /SBN/ DATA PRODUCTS FROM THE AWIPS NETWORK CONTROL FACILITY /NCF/ AND TO RECEIVE THE RETRANSMITTED PRODUCTS VIA THE SBN. REQUESTS FOR RETRANSMISSION WILL BE SENT FROM THE FIELD SITES OVER THE AWIPS WIDE AREA NETWORK /WAN/. WHILE NRS USERS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REQUEST RETRANSMISSION OF PRODUCTS THEY SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS NEW FEATURE BECAUSE IT WILL OCCASIONALLY RESULT IN DUPLICATED PRODUCTS BEING RECEIVED. RELEASE 2.1 HAS ALREADY BEEN INSTALLED IN SOME OF THE AWIPS FIELD SITES BUT WILL NOT FUNCTION UNTIL A COMPANION SOFTWARE UPGRADE IS MADE IN THE NCF. THE NCF UPGRADE ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR INSTALLATION IN AUGUST HAS NOW BEEN DEFERRED TO LATE SEPTEMBER WITH THE TRANSITION TO FULL OPERATION TO FOLLOW. A FURTHER MAILING ON THIS WILL BE PROVIDED WHEN A FIRM SCHEDULE FOR THE TRANSITION BECOMES AVAILABLE. END NNNN
