THE EFDATA MODEL SDR54A DEMODULATOR WHICH IS AN IMPLEMENTATION OF THE REED-SOLOMON CODING HAS UNDERGONE PRELIMINARY LABORATORY AND FIELD TESTING WITH GOOD RESULTS. IT IS NOW PROPOSED TO PROCEED WITH CONVERSION OF THE NOAAPORT SATELLITE BROADCAST SYSTEM TO THE NEW CODING ON A PHASED TRANSITION WITH CHANNELS MOVING TO NEW FREQUENCIES AS THE NEW CODING IS INTRODUCED. THE THREE NOAAPORT CHANNELS CURRENTLY CARRYING TRAFFIC ALL AT A 1.536 MBPS DATA RATE ARE IDENTIFIED AS NWSTG GOES EAST AND GOES WEST. THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL CHANNEL AT A 768 KBPS DATA RATE NOW BEING USED FOR TEST PURPOSES WHICH WILL IDENTIFIED HEREIN AS SPARE . THE INITIAL CHANNEL FREQUENCY ALLOCATION DATA FOR ALL DOWNLINKS IS NWSTG CARRIER 3994.1250 MHZ IF 1155.875 MHZ BANDWIDTH 1400 KHZ GOES-E CARRIER 3995.525 MHZ IF 1154.475 MHZ BANDWIDTH 1400 KHZ GOES-W CARRIER 3990.225 MHZ IF 1159.755 MHZ BANDWIDTH 1400 KHZ SPARE CARRIER 3991.275 MHZ IF 1158.725 MHZ BANDWIDTH 700 KHZ AFTER THE TRANSITION IS COMPLETED THE FINAL FREQUENCY ALLOCATION DATA FOR ALL DOWNLINKS WILL BE NWSTG CARRIER 3990.150 MHZ IF 1159.850 MHZ BANDWIDTH 1550 KHZ GOES-E CARRIER 3994.050 MHZ IF 1155.950 MHZ BANDWIDTH 1550 KHZ GOES-W CARRIER 3991.700 MHZ IF 1158.300 MHZ BANDWIDTH 1550 KHZ SPARE CARRIER 3992.875 MHZ IF 1157.125 MHZ BANDWIDTH 800 KHZ END NNNN 559 NOUS40 KWBC 312210 NOAAPORT NOTICE NO. 1134 OCTOBER 31... 1997 PART 2 OF A 2 PART MESSAGE ATTN NOAAPORT USERS SUBJECT SCHEDULE FOR MODIFICATIONS TO NOAAPORT SATELLITE BROADCAST SYSTEM THE TRANSITION TO THE USE OF REED-SOLOMON DEMODULATORS AT AWIPS SITES WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED IN FOUR PHASES. AT EACH PHASE TRANSMISSION WILL BE IN PARALLEL ON THE ORIGINAL CARRIER FREQUENCY FOR RECEPTION USING THE ORIGINAL DEMODULATORS AS WELL AS A NEW FREQUENCY FOR RECEPTION BY AWIPS SITES WHICH HAVE BEEN CONVERTED TO THE NEW REED-SOLOMON DEMODULATORS. AT THE SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION OF THE PHASE THE TRANSMISSION ON THE ORIGINAL FREQUENCY WILL BE DISCONTINUED. IF DIFFICULTY IS EXPERIENCED AT ANY PHASE THE CONVERSION WILL BE PLACED ON HOLD UNTIL THE PROBLEM CAN BE CORRECTED. THE FOLLOWING IS THE PROPOSED TRANSITION SCHEDULE PHASE 1 SPARE CHANNEL WILL BE OPERATED ON REED-SOLOMON CODING ON 29 OCTOBER 97 AND TESTED UNTIL 4 NOVEMBER 97. IF NO PROBLEMS ARE EXPERIENCED PROCEED TO PHASE 2. SPARE DATA WITH NON-REED-SOLOMON CODING WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE ON THE INITIAL CHANNEL AFTER THIS TIME. PHASE 2 GOES-W CHANNEL CONVERTED ON 4 NOVEMBER 97 AND TESTED UNTIL 6 NOVEMBER 97. IF NO PROBLEMS ARE EXPERIENCED PROCEED TO PHASE 3. GOES-W DATA WITH NON-REED-SOLOMON CODING WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE ON THE INITIAL CHANNEL AFTER THIS TIME. PHASE 3 NWSTG CHANNEL CONVERTED ON 13 NOVEMBER 97 AND TESTED UNTIL 18 NOVEMBER 97.
