The Sounder schedule for GOES-West will be changed at 2200 UTC on Wednesday, September 1, 1999. The Sounder schedules for GOES-East and GOES-West do not currently match. The change will bring the schedules closer into line with other, and most importantly, provide Sounder data for Hawaii. For about 2 years, there have been no tropical sectors scanned on the West satellite. The change reinstates the scanning of tropical sectors. To provide increased coverage for Hawaii, we will concentrate the tropical soundings over Hawaii instead of also sampling an area further east. The traditional names for the scans have been "HUR1" over the Baja area, and "HUR2" which provides coverage over Hawaii. The HUR1 sector will not be activated at this time, but will be replaced by another HUR2 scan. These sectors will likely be renamed in the near future to "Baja" and "Hawaii" sector. In the Sounder schedule currently posted to the SSD Home Page, the HUR1 sectors should be read as HUR2 sectors. The revised Sounder schedule for GOES-West will be posted to "www.ssd.noaa.gov/" as soon as possible.
