991 NOUS41 KWBC 012114 PNSWSH PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...COMMENT REQUEST NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS WASHINGTON DC 520 PM EDT THU MAY 1 2003 TO FAMILY OF SERVICES /FOS/ SUBSCRIBERS...NOAA WEATHER WIRE SERVICE /NWWS/ SUBSCRIBERS...EMERGENCY MANAGERS WEATHER INFORMATION NETWORK /EMWIN/ SUBSCRIBERS... NOAAPORT SUBSCRIBERS...OTHER NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE /NWS/ CUSTOMERS AND PARTNERS...NWS EMPLOYEES FROM ROBERT E. LIVEZEY CHIEF...CLIMATE SERVICES DIVISION SUBJECT CURRENTLY SOLICITING PUBLIC COMMENTS BY JUNE 30 2003 ON PROPOSED PLANS FOR MEDIUM RANGE CLIMATE OUTLOOKS AFTER OCTOBER 1 2003 WE ARE SOLICITING COMMENTS BY JUNE 30 2003 ON PLANS FOR SERVICE CHANGES TO TAKE PLACE AFTER OCTOBER 1 2003 IN THE CLIMATE PREDICTIONS CENTER/S /CPC/ NATIONAL MEDIUM RANGE CLIMATE OUTLOOKS /SEE CONTACT INFORMATION BELOW/. SPECIFICALLY...WE ARE PROPOSING TO DISCONTINUE 6- TO 10-DAY OUTLOOK PRODUCTS /LISTED BELOW AT THE END OF THIS MESSAGE/. THESE CHANGES WOULD ELIMINATE SERVICE DUPLICATION AND POTENTIAL INCONSISTENCIES SINCE THE 6- TO 10-DAY OUTLOOKS OVERLAP THE DAY 6 AND DAY 7 LOCAL FORECASTS ISSUED BY THE WEATHER FORECAST OFFICES /WFO/ AND DAY 6 AND DAY 7 NATIONAL FORECASTS ISSUED BY THE HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER /HPC/. CPC PRODUCES NATIONAL WEEK TWO FORECASTS THAT WERE DESIGNED TO REPLACE THE 6- TO 10-DAY OUTLOOKS WHEN THE WFOS AND HPC BEGAN MAKING FORECASTS FOR DAYS 6 AND 7. THESE CHANGES WOULD ALLOW CPC TO CONCENTRATE MORE EFFORT ON IMPROVING THE SKILL OF THE CORRESPONDING WEEK 2 OUTLOOKS AND FUTURE INTRASEASONAL OUTLOOK PRODUCTS. BEFORE MAKING THESE CHANGES...WE WILL WORK WITH YOU TO ENSURE THAT HPC/S AND THE WFO DAY 6 AND 7 FORECASTS AND CPC/S WEEK TWO OUTLOOKS WILL MEET YOUR FORECAST NEEDS FROM DAYS 6 TO 14 THROUGH A SMOOTH TRANSITION AND SUFFICIENT ADVANCE NOTICE.
