SUBJECT: Changes to the NWS Production Suite
NCEP will perform its next quarterly backup test on
Thursday, 2 October 2003. This test will exercise our ability to
send backup products from our processors at the
Telecommunications Operations Center (TOC) to both NOAAPORT
and the TOC FTP servers. For this test we will send only the 14
UTC RUC products generated by FSL in Boulder using our backup
processors. All other products will be disseminated from the
NCEP Central Computing System (CCS) as normal.
GFS processing was modified on 26 August to produce
half-degree grids in GRIB edition 2 format (GRIB2). These
half-degree grids are experimental and are being produced as part
of a pilot study on the use of GRIB2. New GRIB2 Data
Representation Templates 5.40000 and Data Template 7.40000 are
being tested to encode the gridded data into JPEG2000 format.
These experimental templates have not yet been validated by WMO,
but they are documented in:

The half-degree files are available on the TOC FTP server
at:

where XX=00, 06, 12 or 18, and YYYYMMDD are current yearmonthday.

All FAX charts based on output from the remaining models
will be removed from the NWS FTP server on the following
schedule:

GFS (AVN) - 23 September 2003
