Topic: Midnight Blackbody Calibration Correction 11/15/03 Message Issued: October 24, 2003, 1810 UTC Satellites Impacted: GOES-10 and GOES-12 Products Impacted: GOES-10 and GOES-12 Imager Infrared Data Date/Time of Initial Impact: November 15, 2003 Local Midnight *TENTATIVE* -------------------------- Details: On or about November 15, 2003, the real-time on-orbit calibration of the GOES Imagers will be improved by the addition of a routine to correct for the detrimental effect of solar heating on the calibration around local midnight. This effect has been observed since the launch of GOES-8 in 1994. When the Midnight Blackbody Calibration Correction (MBCC) becomes operational, you will notice an increase in observed brightness temperatures near local midnight, primarily in channel 2 (3.8 um), but also to a lesser extent in the longer wavelength channels. The maximum increases will be approximately 1K in channel 2 (typical change: 0.5K), and much less in the other channels. *** The date of the MBCC becoming operational (11/15/03) is tentative pending further tests of the upgraded SPS units. *** If there is a change in this date, we will send another notice to users.
