The National Centers for Environmental Prediction, Air Force Weather Agency, Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, National Weather Association and American Meteorological Society invite your participation in a â??Symposium on the 50th Anniversary of Operational Numerical Weather Prediction", to be held June 14-17, 2004 at the Inn and Conference Center at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland (just north of Washington DC). This symposium will feature faculty and students from around the world who are interested in the pioneering developments in NWP and the remarkable improvements in forecast skill and support of the nationâ??s economy, well-being, and national defense achieved over the last 50 years. Just as important, there will be plenty of opportunity for dialogue and discussion on the history, merit, evolution, accuracy, impact and importance of operational NWP. Many of the most prominent and well-known experts in the field of operational NWP have been invited to participate in this event. The planned symposium sessions include a Historical Overview; Round Table Discussion; Evolution of Supercomputers and Forecast Models; From Model Predictions to Forecasters: Then and Now; Evolution of Data Assimilation; Long-range Forecasting; and The Future of NWP. Sessions will include invited papers, poster and oral presentations, and panel discussions. Broad participation from the public, private, and academic sectors will be prominent, to include well-known scientists and industry leaders in NWP. This symposium will also have an historical exhibit that will feature industry, civil, and military NWP displays, demonstrations, and current applications. Faculty and students are welcome to participate in every aspect of this event. We would welcome artifacts, informational handouts, or other materials that might demonstrate the evolution and impact of operational NWP since 1954. If you would like the opportunity to present your research, submit your abstract electronically to Eugenia Kalnay, ekalnay@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, and Ken Carey, kcarey@xxxxxxxxxxxx, by February 15, 2004. Extended abstracts will be due by April 16, 2004. Register by April 30th and receive special early registration rates. For group of ten or more students, you get a 60% discount over the AMS member registration rates! All those who register will receive breakfast and lunch, participate in morning and afternoon breaks, be invited to join us for both Monday and Tuesday evening icebreakers, and receive a CD of conference abstracts. If you would like to register, or get general information about this historic and unique event, we welcome you to go to the symposium web site, http://wwwt.ncep.noaa.gov/JNWPU50/, or contact Ken Carey at 703-610-1933, kcarey@xxxxxxxxxxxx. ---------- End Forwarded Message ----------
