Subject:                Changes to the NWS Production Suite

1.  The replacement of the NAM-Eta with the NAM-WRF is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, 13 June.  Anyone interested in participating in the evaluation can subscribe to the evaluation mailing list

https://lstsrv.ncep.noaa.gov/mailman/listinfo/ncep.list.modelevalinfo

and send their evaluation back via the mailing list.  Once registered, check the prior postings link to view the details on the NAM-WRF evaluation. Parallel data sets for the new NAM/WRF are available at:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/nam/para/

2.  An upgrade to the Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS) is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, 30 May.  Anyone interested in participating in the evaluation should follow the instructions listed above. Parallel data sets for the new GEFS are available at:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gens/para/

3. NCEP FTP services changing - 17 April 2006 - NCEP will be moving the location of its operational data sets to a faster server located next to our connection to the internet at NOAA headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.  This will provide users with faster access to the operational data sets contained within the following locations:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data1
ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data2
To accomplish this move we have to separate our non-operational, NCEP center specific ftp content from the ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov interface.  Users who still access these data sets will need to now use the center specific ftp sites. For example, users who access content from EMC at ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/emc need to begin accessing these data from ftp://ftp.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/. ; Access to the non-operational, NCEP center specific data sets via the ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov interface will be disabled on 17 April 2006.  Further information on this change is located at:

http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/changes

4.  As soon as the moratorium on changes at the NWS Telecommunications Operations Center (TOC) is lifted, NCEP will begin the transition from GRIB1 to GRIB2, by placing duplicate GRIB2 files on the TOC FTP server.  Both sets of data will remain on the TOC FTP server for a minimum of 180 days to allow users to transition to the GRIB2 data sets. More information will be provided once the TOC moratorium has ended.

5.  A directory of NCEP model data available on both the TOC and NCEP FTP servers is located at:

    http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/products/

The WEB site also contains a full parameter list for each data file. Currently information is only available for NAM, GFS, Global Ensemble, RSAS, RUC, ECMWF, and UKMET.  Information on other data availability will be added shortly.

6.  Upcoming changes to NCEP's production suite can be viewed at the following website:

    http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/changes/

This WEB site contain details on any product or timing changes that are associated with upcoming implementations.

7.  Maintenance of subscriptions to the JIF memo mailing list can be performed via a new list server at:
