20060802: DMSP SSM/I products

NOTE: The nws-changes mailing list is no longer active. The list archives are made available for historical reasons.

All - you are being sent this email because you are listed as a user of DMSP SSM/I
data products residing on NOAA's Shared Processing System (SPP) located in
Suitland Maryland. We have been informed by our Department of Defense colleagues at the Fleet Numerical Meteorology Oceanography Center (FNMOC) that there is a possibility that SSM/I data from the DMSP F-15 platform may be turned off in mid August. This is due to the fact that a beacon that will be activated aboard F-15 for ground radar calibration purposes interferes with the 22 GHz (V) channel measurements. We in NESDIS are interested in hearing your thoughts about any impacts this decision may have on your organization. Data products from F-13, F-14 and F-16 (the latter being in a similar orbit but with SSMIS instead of SSMI) will still be available as usual. Any information you could provide on impacts by noon this Thursday would be most appreciated. The plan is to provide a consolidated
response back to FNMOC as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for your
assistance in this matter.
