20061130: BUFR changes-FYI

NOTE: The nws-changes mailing list is no longer active. The list archives are made available for historical reasons.

A new test file and BUFR table are once again on the gp16.ssd.nesdis.noaa.gov anonymous ftp website. Attached is a revised descriptor document. Test files should begin flowing to the DDS and to users next week. The filenames are at the bottom of this exchange.

Just a quick follow-up. I have received feedback about two changes that need to be made to the BUFR product. The units for wavelength are incorrectly stored as meters instead of nanometers. Also we want to add more decimals to our percent confidence values. When these changes are made, I will put out another test file.

Also, after these changes are made, Jeff Ator from NCEP will provide me with a "WMO style" descriptor of the new 3-10-019 BUFR Table D that should be easier for you to understand. The format I provided was more applicable to the NCEP BUFR style.
Thanks,

Donna

Dear BUFR Users,

For many months now, we have been working to put the new SBUV/2 Version 8 product into WMO compliant BUFR format. I have placed a sample Version 8 File (called bufrout) and BUFR table (called bufrtabl) on our anonymous FTP site so you can get a preview of this product. You can find the file on gp16.ssd.nesdis.noaa.gov in directory pub/ozone.

Thanks go to George Goodreau and Jeff Ator for their work on this task.
We hope to make the Version 8 product fully operational in Jan 09. The BUFR files should be available pre-operationally shortly. I will plan to distributed the files to you via your existing methods as soon as available, UNLESS I hear that you do not want them yet. Files will have the same names as current BUFR products, EXCEPT will say PMFV8 instead of just PMF:
   Orbital files - PRD.OZONE.PMFV8.Nxx.Dxxxxx.Sxxxx.Exxxx.Bxxxxx
   Daily files - PRD.OZONE.PMFV8.Nxx.BUFR

Let me know if you experience any problems getting or using this product.

We are planning an overlap period with the current V6 product, but eventually plan to phase out the V6 product. We will fully coordinate that with users to make sure everyone has switched over the V8 product.

Thanks,

Donna
