Topic: GOES-14 NOAA Science Test and Information
Message Issued: November 24, 2009, 1720 UTC
Satellites Impacted: GOES-14
Products Impacted: All products and services from GOES-14
Date/Time of Initial Impact: November 30, 2009 --------------------------

GOES-14 NOAA Science Test:

NOAA will perform a science test for GOES-14, located at 105 degrees West, beginning on Monday, November 30, 2009 through Monday, January 4, 2010. During this time, NOAA will operate GOES-14 with several test schedules, including a GOES-East schedule, a GOES-West schedule, a Rapid Scan schedule, and several other test schedules. All relevant links to information will be included at the bottom of this message. NOAA plans to generate data and products during this test. Direct readout users are encouraged to participate in the science test through testing of their receive equipment. Following the test, NOAA will turn off the GOES-14 imager and sounder but the space weather instruments will remain operational.

GOES-14 Spectral Response Functions updated:

GOES-14 Imager Spectral Response Functions (SRF) are being updated as a result
of a new vendor release (Calibration and Alignment Handbook, Rev E). The SRFs
and resulting calibration coefficients for all channels and detectors have
changed to various degrees. However, the changes are quite small and may not be
detectable in the final products. The change will take place around 2000 UTC on
November 24, 2009.

GOES-14 GVAR Testing:

For GVAR users - the GVAR has been modified for GOES-O (GOES-14) and beyond. To accommodate the extra detector in band 6, the calibration and navigation information contained in block 0 have been moved to block 11. However, NOAA and NASA are working on copying the navigation (instrument nadir and detector offsets) information back to block 0. A test of this change will occur on November 25, 2009 from 1515 UTC to 1915 UTC, only on GOES-14. Direct readout users are encouraged to check with their ingest vendor for GVAR patches and/or updates.
