PNSWSH TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATION NOTICE 10-07...AMENDED NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS WASHINGTON DC 150 PM EST MON JAN 25 2010 TO: SUBSCRIBERS:-FAMILY OF SERVICES -NOAA WEATHER WIRE SERVICE
-EMERGENCY MANAGERS WEATHER INFORMATION NETWORK-NOAAPORT OTHER NWS PARTNERS...USERS AND EMPLOYEES
FROM: TIMOTHY MCCLUNG SCIENCE PLANS BRANCH CHIEFOFFICE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SUBJECT: AMENDED DATE: RAPID UPDATE CYCLE CHANGES: POSTPONED TO MARCH 2 2010
AMENDED TO POSTPONE EFFECTIVE DATE FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF RAPID UPDATE CYCLE CHANGES FROM FEBRUARY 23 to MARCH 2 2010.
EFFECTIVE TUESDAY MARCH 2 2010...BEGINNING WITH THE 1500 COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME /UTC/ RUN...THE NATIONAL CENTERS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PREDICTION /NCEP/ WILL UPGRADE THE RAPID UPDATE CYCLE /RUC/ MODELING SYSTEM. THE PRIMARY CHANGE IS TO EXTEND THE OUTPUT FROM THE SYSTEM FOR ALL CYCLES TO 18 HOURS. CURRENTLY THE 00...03...06...09...12... 15...18 AND 21 UTC MODEL CYCLES PRODUCE FORECAST GUIDANCE OUT TO 12 HOURS WITH THE OTHER CYCLES PREDICTING ONLY TO 9 HOURS. WITH THIS CHANGE ALL GRIB AND BUFR PRODUCTS WILL BE AVAILABLE HOURLY OUT THROUGH 18 HOURS FOR ALL 24 CYCLES. THE NEW FORECAST HOURS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE ON NOAAPORT OR IN AWIPS AT THIS TIME BUT WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC AT THE LOCATIONS LISTED BELOW. IN ADDITION THE FOLLOWING CHANGES ARE BEING MADE TO THE RUC ANALYSIS/PRE-PROCESSING CODE:
1. THE MODEL WILL NOW ASSIMILATE CANADIAN AIRCRAFT /AMDAR/ DATA. 2. A BUG IN THE CLOUD-BUILDING CODE IS CORRECTED THAT WILLIMPACT THE VIRTUAL POTENTIAL TEMPERATURE IN CLOUDY AREAS. THE IMPACTS OF THIS BUG WERE GENERALLY SMALL AND CONFINED TO THE ANALYSIS TIME OR FIRST HOUR OF MODEL INTEGRATION.
3. THE REJECT LIST FOR AIRCRAFT OBSERVATIONS WILL BE UPDATED.4. THE TIMING OF THE REMOVAL OF SNOW AT GRID POINTS WHERE THE NESDIS SNOW ANALYSIS DOES NOT SUPPORT ITS PRESENCE /SNOW CLEARING/ WILL BE CHANGED FROM ONCE PER DAY AT 19 UTC TO TWICE PER DAY AT 17 UTC AND 23 UTC TO MAKE THE PROCESS MORE EFFICIENT. A LAND-SEA MASK WILL ALSO BE INCORPORATED INTO THIS SNOW CLEARING PROCESS DUE TO THE DIFFERENCE IN RESOLUTION BETWEEN THE NESDIS ANALYSIS AND THE RUC. DATA DELIVERY TIMING OF THE EXISTING RUC PRODUCTS WILL NOT BE IMPACTED BY THIS IMPLEMENTATION. AN INCREASE IN DATA VOLUMES IS EXPECTED FOR THE ADDITIONAL FORECAST HOURS. THE RUC GUIDANCE IS AVAILABLE AT THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS /USE LOWERCASE EXCEPT FOR SL...ST...MT AND CY IN THE FIRST URL. THE XX IN THE FIRST URL REPRESENTS THE MODEL CYCLE: A TWO DIGIT NUMBER RANGING FROM 00 TO 23...CORRESPONDING TO MODEL CYCLE IN UTC./

THESE ELEMENTS MAY CHANGE WITH FUTURE NCEP MODEL IMPLEMENTATIONS. NCEP WILL MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT TO ALERT USERS TO THESE CHANGES PRIOR TO ANY IMPLEMENTATIONS.
