-------- Original Message -------- 948 NOUS72 KNCF 071657 ADMNCF . WHAT: SBN / NOAAPort Expansion& Hardware Upgrade . DATE: September 08, 2010 . NOTICE: #001 . IMPLEMENTATION DATE: March 2011 . Attention: NOAAPort Customers . AGENDA: . The AWIPS Program Office (APO) is planning on expanding the bandwidth on the AWIPS Satellite Broadcast Network (SBN/NOAAPort) feed from 10.24Mbps to about 30Mbps. . As part of this expansion, the SBN/NOAAPort feed will also be transitioning from the current DVB-S standard to the more efficient DVB-S2 standard. Accordingly, all sites will be required to upgrade their hardware to support the DVB-S2 standard. . As technical specifications are finalized& hardened, the APO will provide monthly message updates via multiple dissemination methods as well as the NOAAPort webpage: . http://www.nws.noaa.gov/noaaport/html/noaaport.shtml . To aid our customers with the transition, there will be a 30 day window (March 5th 2011 - April 3rd 2011) of dual illumination to allow AWIPS sites and NOAAPort customers adequate time to complete the transition. During this transition period, the full SBN/NOAAPort feed will be disseminated both in DVB-S and DVB-S2. . Internally, NWS plans to use backwardly-compatible receive-side hardware (to enable the equipment transition to commence prior to the dual illumination period). . The driving force of this bandwidth expansion and hardware upgrade is to support the dissemination of additional data products over the SBN / NOAAport such as: . "Dual Polarization Radar Products "GOES and POES Satellite Products "Analysis and Forecast Products (e.g., NCEP Models) . Current plans dictate that any new, voluminous product additions will need to be held till after the initial SBN bandwidth expansion phase has been completed. The SBN product additions will be described further in subsequent notices. . Note: This information notice will be posted on the NWS Data Management Notices Web Page: . http://www.nws.noaa.gov/datamgmt/notices.shtml .
