-------- Original Message -------- 467 NOUS41 KWBC 141335 PNSWSH Service Change Notice 10-43 National Weather Service Headquarters Washington DC 935 AM EDT Thu Oct 14 2010 To: Subscribers: -Family of Services -NOAA Weather Wire Service -Emergency Managers Weather Information Network -NOAAPORT Other NWS partners and employees From: Kim Runk Chief, Integrated Services Division Central Region Headquarters Kansas City, MO Subject: Transition from Experimental to Operational Status of the Wind-Hail Tag Line for NWS Central Region Severe Thunderstorm Warnings: Effective November 15 2010 Effective Monday, November 15, 2010, NWS Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) in the NWS Central Region (CR) will transition a service enhancement associated with severe thunderstorm warnings from experimental to operational status. The enhancement is the concise coded tag line identifying maximum forecast wind gusts and hail size at the end of severe thunderstorm warnings (SVR) and associated follow-up statements (SVS). Inclusion of this information at the end of these products represents an effort to respond to requests from partners in the emergency management community and several societal impacts groups. One specific application concerns the use of this information to activate emergency alert sirens when conditions exceed user-defined thresholds, a decision normally reserved for tornado events. The tag line makes easily accessible the information necessary to reach such a decision. In addition, it facilitates the use of parsing software to automate alerting functions whether by government officials or private sector vendors. Feedback during the experimental test period was so overwhelmingly positive that the NWS CRH decided to make this change a permanent and official part of severe thunderstorm warnings issued from NWS CR WFOs. A map showing all CR WFOs is available online at: http://www.weather.gov/os/notification/resources/cr_wfos.pdf A more detailed description of the coded tag line, including format and examples, can be found in the Service Description Document (SDD) at: http://products.weather.gov For further information, please contact: Kim Runk, Chief of Integrated Services NWS Central Region Headquarters 7220 NW 101st Terrace Kansas City, MO 64153 kim.runk@xxxxxxxx National Service Change Notices are online at: http://www.weather.gov/os/notif.htm $$
