Szkil Chief, Awareness Branch Performance and Awareness Division Office of Climate, Water, and Weather Services Subject: Warnings Starting to Roll Out on Wireless Emergency Alerts Today, the most critical NWS warnings will begin triggering Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on WEA-capable cell phones. NWS produced Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) messages are pushed to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). These messages are formatted to trigger a WEA broadcast for the following types of NWS warnings. - Tornado Warnings - Flash Flood Warnings - Hurricane and Typhoon Warnings - Extreme Wind Warnings - Blizzard and Ice Storm Warnings - Dust Storm Warnings Through the summer, the NWS will be working to enable the triggering of WEA for Tsunami Warnings. For information about IPAWS, please visit http://www.fema.gov/emergency/ipaws/ Wireless carriers began rolling out the WEA service across the nation on April 7, 2012. All major wireless carriers and hundreds of smaller carriers are taking part in WEA on a voluntary basis.
