-------- Original Message -------- 606 NOUS41 KWBC 011831 PNSWSH Technical Implementation Notice 12-53 National Weather Service Headquarters Washington DC 232 PM EDT Thu Nov 1 2012 To: Subscribers -Family of Services -NOAA Weather Wire Service -Emergency Managers Weather Information Network -NOAAPORT Other NWS Partners and Employees From: Richard J. Vogt Director, WSR-88D Radar Operations Center Subject: WSR-88D Build 13.1 Beta Test and Deployment Started October 29, 2012 The NEXRAD Program started a Beta Test of Radar Data Acquisition/Radar Product Generator (RDA/RPG) Build 13.1 the week of October 29, 2012 at Wichita, KS (KICT). The Build 13.1 Beta Test will also be conducted at the following three sites: SITE APPROXIMATE START DATE ______________________ ___________ Vance AFB, OK (KVNX) 13 November Yuma, AZ (KYUX) 27 November South Kauai, HI (PHKI) 4 December A summary of the major changes in Build 13.1 follows: 1. Re-implements the Automated Volume Scan Evaluation and Termination (AVSET) and improved Clutter Mitigation Decision (CMD) algorithms at FAA and NWS (redundant RDA) WSR-88Ds where the Dual Polarization modification has been completed. AVSET terminates the current volume scan after the radar has scanned all elevations with significant reflectivity returns resulting in lower elevations scanned more frequently. The improved CMD algorithm (Dual Polarization variables added) better identifies ground clutter for removal by radar filters. 2. Implements the 2-Dimensional Velocity Dealiasing Algorithm (2DVDA). This new algorithm increases the area of properly dealiased velocity data and reduces the number of false mesocyclone detections by the Mesocyclone Detection Algorithm. Additional 2DVDA information is available at: http://www.roc.noaa.gov/WSR88D/NewRadarTechnology/NewTechDefault. aspx 3. Implements the RPG software required to add the remaining eight Air Force WSR-88D Level 2 data streams to the Level 2 Data Collection Network. Routers also need to be installed. The NWS will release more specific 2013 turn-on dates for these data flows by the end of this year.
