-------- Original Message -------- 042 NOUS41 KWBC 291814 PNSWSH Service Change Notice 13-68 National Weather Service Headquarters Washington DC 215 PM EDT Tue Oct 29 2013 TO: National Weather Service (NWS) Offices Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Customers Family of Services (FOS) Subscribers Other Customers of NWS Aviation Forecasts FROM: Cynthia Abelman Chief, Aviation Services Branch SUBJECT: Change of Name and Identifier for the Jackson, MS, VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range (VOR) Aviation Radio Navigation Site Effective November 29, 2013 NOTE: The following changes have no impact on NOAA Weather Wire Service subscribers Effective Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at 1500 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), 1000 am Eastern Standard Time, the NWS will cease using the 3-letter identifier JAN and begin using the 3-letter identifier of MHZ. On August 22, 2013, the FAA changed the name of the Jackson VOR from Jackson to Magnolia. With this name change, the 3-letter identifier changed from JAN to MHZ. The physical location of the VOR also changed. The new location coordinates of the VOR are N3226.04' W9005.99'. VORs are used by pilots for navigation and also used in aviation weather forecasts and SIGMETs as reference points in defining the area of weather hazards. Because NWS uses VOR locations to define areal coverage of weather hazards in addition to their use as navigation aids, the NWS will make this name and identifier change to maintain consistent terminology.
