The THREDDS people will probably give you a more complete answer,

1. TDS does not use Hyrax - it is 100% java and use the nj22 code.
2. If you are using the OPeNDAP DRDS to connect to data bases, TDS
does not do that.
3. We have netcdf files of all kinds - and there has been no
problem of serving in the one or the other server. TDS does
provide aggregation and the ability to append metadata through NcML.
4. Based on experience from others, GRIB data works just fine also.
5. On the client side, it should make no difference.
All correct as far as I know. TDS does not handle HDF4, but does a
good job with most HDF5 files. Hyrax handles HDF4 and will handle
simple HDF5 files if you're willing to build the HDF5 from source.
