Hi Roy,
The TDM needs to be able to write to a directory to store gbx and ncx
files. By default, these index files are written along-side the data, but
the location is controllable by the GribIndex element in threddsConfig.xml:
https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/thredds/current/tds/reference/ThreddsConfigXMLFile.html#GribIndexWriting
Each grib file will have a gbx file and an ncx file associated with it. The
gbx file is essentially the GRIB records, minus the data. The ncx file
contains the serialized coordinate system objects associated with the
records in the grib file. The overall collection also has an ncx file,
which contains the serialized coordinate systems of the overall collection
of data in all of the grib files for the collection. This three tier system
allows for quick, scalable access and aggregation of grib files.
Cheers,
Sean
PS: the kids are having fun, food was cooking (now digesting), and
beverages were had...perfect recipe for a discussion about GRIB :-)
