Tom Whittaker has set up some nice tools for installing
Java, Java3D, VisAD and Jython from one file on Windows,
and I think the Unidata folks have done something like
that for installing via WebStart. Perhaps Tom or Unidata
can comment on easy install for Linux.

You can use VisAD without Java3D by using DisplayImplJ2D
instead of DisplayImplJ3D. These are 2-D only and use
Java2D.
