The problem is that the example classes found under visad.examples are in
the default package (ie: should be at the same level than the visad folder).
The workaround for Eclipse is as follows:
-open the project's properties page
-go to 'Java Build path' and select the Source tab
-you should see a single source folder (corresponding to the default
package)
-add a new 'Source Folder' pointing to the visad/examples folder.
You're done.
