There are 3 directories in the visad.jar that deal with HDF things:
visad/data/hdfeos, visad/data/hdf5, and ncsa/hdf5.
While I do not have a build without these classes, I believe you can
use the 'zip' program
to remove these entries:
cp visad.jar visad.jar.back
zip -d visad.jar *hdf*
I did this and then was able to run the VisAD Spreadsheet from the
updated JAR file. Hope this helps...

Is there a copy of the visad.jar published anywhere that does not embed
