This report updates the status of Unidata's IDV development efforts since the last report (April, 2009).

• IDV version 2.7 was initially released on June 25, 2009, and two updates have since been released. The latest update can be downloaded at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/downloads/idv/.

  New features in this release included:

  • Parallel Data Reading and Rendering
  • First guess grid for Objective Analysis
  • Export data to netCDF
  • Improved import of text point data
  • New radar format (UF) and display (RHI sweeps)

• The IDV developers taught a training workshop August 13-15 to 21 students as part of the Unidata Training Workshops. Attendees represented several countries, government entities and UCAR groups. The reviews were exceptionally favorable.
• The IDV Steering Committee held a conference call on July 30 where the developers discussed and showed some of the new 2.7 features and received input on priorities for the upcoming 6 months. High priority items are improved rendering for vector graphics output (e.g. publication quality graphics) and more GEMPAK diagnostics. Subsequent e-mail discussions have set the priorities for the GEMPAK diagnostic functions. Since Tom Whittaker is now chair of UserComm, we need a replacement chair of the IDV Steering committee.

New development

Development and testing are underway for the next release of the IDV (2.8) which should be released in late 2009 before the Fall AGU meeting. Several of these features are already available for testing in the IDV nightly build.

• Improved Globe Display - the globe display has been improved to be more "GoogleEarth-like".
• Remote reading of netCDF point and GEMPAK surface files
• Production version of netCDF-Java 4.1
• User defined fly-throughs
• Radar cross section
• Access and display of COSMIC data

Ongoing efforts include:

• Collaborating in the development of VisAD and McIDAS-V
• Keeping up with new Java interfaces and developments
• Various and sundry IDV bug fixes and enhancements.
